FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOUTH PADRE LIVE LAUNCHES 24 HOUR COVERAGE OF SANDCASTLE DAYS - OCT 21 - 24, 2010

To encourage and motivate participation and attendance to the 23rd annual South Padre Island Sandcastle Days www.SouthPadreLivecams.com, a local media corporation will begin streaming live coverage of 23 of the best sand sculptors in the world as they create amazing masterpieces on the beach in Isla Blanca Park on the South Padre Live Surf Cam in Isla Blanca Park. Amateur and professional sand sculptors from all over the world descend on South Padre Island every year to create beautiful works of art using natural elements of the beach. The not-for-profit event showcases the artwork and an appreciation for the coastal environment, and donates to organizations helping to preserve it. Well known for their coverage of local events and for providing viewers with actual control of the live cameras, South Padre Live will be broadcasting every exciting moment of this year’s showdown in the sand. Master Sand sculptors from as far away as Latvia and Holland will be participating in this year’s competition. Coverage begins as bulldozers start pushing up piles of sand on Monday, Oct. 18. By Tuesday, the sculptors will be hard at work on their massive demo sculpture. Wednesday they will move to their own piles and start packing, pounding and shaving sand into their original personal entry. As early as Thursday spectators will be able to start casting votes for their favorites. By Friday, the sculptures will be taking shape and the vendors will be set up. Sandcastle lessons will be in full swing over at lesson mountain and the Texas State Championship - a two-day contest for the first time in 2010 - will kick off. Saturday is the big day with the addition of the open categories (Youth/Elementary; Youth/Secondary, Adult Teams and Families), more sandcastle lessons, live entertainment and ultimately cash prizes in all categories. By Sunday the sculptures will be completed and available for viewing and voting upon and the vendors will still be up and selling.

Expect sculptures in both the masters and TSC categories to be more elaborate and carefully detailed than in years past. In each case, the sculptors are being given an extra day and so will be able to produce more fully-realized masterpieces. Also new in 2010, the master sculptors have been paired with specific sponsors. Look for clever and creative methods of incorporating the sponsor’s logo into the finished piece.

Several of the sculptors competing here this year placed in the money in this past as well as recent world championships so watch out for amazing sculptures from “heavy hitters” Wilfred Stijger, DanBelcher, Meredith Corson, Dan Doubleday and Karen Fralich. Fred Mallett - former SPI Alderman who has since moved to Port Aransas almost always places wherever he competes. Of course, locals have a bit of an edge in the Peoples Choice voting, so we can expect perennial crowd favorites “Amazin’ Walter” McDonald and his talented daughter Christy (aka “Ruby the Pirate Queen”) to do well in that contest.

South Padre Live features Live Cams covering activities in the South Padre Island area and also feature specials on condos, hotels, motels, and restaurants in the area. There are a great number of packages and deals available to those wanting to come see the week’s festivities. Large crowds are expected this weekend as the weather is forecast to be perfect and the level of skills and talents held by the sculptors is nothing less than amazing. You can see the coverage live now at www.sandcastledays.com . Live coverage includes the activities at Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island and continues to the awards ceremony at Louie’s Backyard on Sunday evening.
